THE SEVEN CHURCHES OF REVELATION (APOCALYPSE)

6 DAYS / 5 NIGHTS

Madonna - Virgin Mary StatueVisit all the Seven Churches mentioned by St. John in the Book of Revelations. Each was a founding community of Christianity. As a bonus we take you to the House of Virgin Mary and other important Christian, antiquity and natural sites in the region.


 

Day 1 ARRIVAL IN IZMIR - We welcome you at the airport, transfer you to your hotel and give an orientation tour. Smyrna (mentioned by St. John in the Book of Revelations: 2:8-11) is our first visit to one of the Seven Churches of Revelation. Next we go to ancient Smyrna's oldest and beautiful church, St. Polycarp, built in 1625.

Saint Polycarp ChurchDay 2 IZMIR - PERGAMUM - THYATIRA - IZMIR - This morning we tour Pergamon (Revelation 2:12-17), an important city of antiquity. Parchment was invented here. We explore the remnants: Acropolis famous for its library, one of the world's steepest theaters, figure of Nike, temples of Athena, Dionysos and Trajan. Then we take a short drive to the ancient medical center Asklepion where Galen taught and Red Basilica. Next we go to Thyatira (Revelation 2:18-29 Acts 16:14). (B,L)

Day 3 IZMIR - SARDIS - PHILADELPHIA - PAMUKKALE - Today we start with Sardis (Revelation 3:1-6), the capital of Lydia and once the world's richest city. The first coins were made here. Sites include Artemis Temple, Roman stadium, Roman baths, theater, one of the world’s oldest synagogues with some intact mosaic pavements. Next we visit the most recent of the Churches, Philadelphia (Revelation 3:7-13). Then we go to Pamukkale, "Cotton Castle" where we see tiers of white limestone cascading down the hillside. Near the waterfalls are the ruins of the Roman city of Hierapolis. The Martyrium of St. Philip is here. (B,L,D)

Day 4 PAMUKKALE - LAODICEA - APHRODISIAS - KUSADASI - This morning we go to Laodicea (Revelation 3:14-22) and visit the recently excavated church and theater. Later we tour Aphrodisias, the city dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite and visit the museum, well preserved Stadium, Agora, Roman Baths. Overnight in Kusadasi. (B,L,D)

Day 5 KUSADASI - EPHESUS - KUSADASI - In the morning we visit Ephesus (Revelation 1:11:2:1-17 Acts 18:19-28:19), the most important and best preserved antique city. We walk on its marble paved roads as has St. Paul, St. Luke, St. John and the Virgin Mary. Pope John Paul II at House of Virgin MaryWe see the remnants: Celsus Library, Great Theater, Roman Baths, Agoras, fountains and temples including one of the "Seven Wonders of the World", Temple of Artemis. One of the first churches honoring Virgin Mary was built here and in 431 it hosted the Third Ecumenical council of Christianity. Next we will visit the Basilica of St. John and House of Virgin Mary that was miraculously found in 1891. The Vatican has accepted the House as a pilgrimage destination. Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II have prayed here as well. Overnight in Kusadasi. (B,L,D)

Day 6 Departure or Extension - After breakfast we transfer to the airport for the trip back home or if arrangements are made we go on another tour or a sea cruise or to a holiday resort. (B)
